Chum Salmon Risk of Extinction in the North Pacific, 2004
Keywords: Fish
(From the book Atlas of Pacific Salmon: The First Map-based Status Assessment of Salmon in the North Pacific)
Generally, chum populations are either at low or high risk throughout their British Columbia and southeast Alaska range, a pattern not seen in other species of Oncorhynchus. Because chum populations are thinner in southerly latitudes, threats can have dramatic impacts. In the Russian Far East, biologists are concerned about runs in Kamchatka, Magadan, Khabarovsk and Primorye. Like pink, chum prefer colder waters; this may result in increased risk and more extirpations at the southern edge of their range and in arid inlands. (This map is based on two-season-run data.)
